Pre-Assessment – An Essential Step in Successful Certification
Getting ISO certified can feel incredibly high-stakes, and unexpected gaps can delay your certification for months. That’s why a Pre-Assessment Registration Audit is the ultimate tool for success. Think of it as a comprehensive “dress rehearsal”: a thorough, realistic look into the official audit process before it counts.
What is a Pre-Assessment?
A pre-assessment is not quite an “audit”; it functions as a broad overview of your management system to determine how ready your company is for the actual registration audit process. The process runs about one to three days, depending on the size of your facility.
Pre-assessments do not guarantee that all nonconformities will be uncovered.
Benefits of a Pre-Assessment
Pre-assessments can run virtually and fit seamlessly into your schedule, cutting down on the time, travel costs, and internal pressure that typically come with pursuing certification.
A Pre-Assessment can:
- Identify your management system strengths and weaknesses
- Measure how your current management system performs against the standard
- Focus your team’s attention on the areas that need strengthening
- Build your staff’s knowledge and confidence in the auditing process
- Eliminate unnecessary preparations before the registration audit, so you stop spending valuable resources on requirements that do not apply.
- Increase your company’s probability of first-time success
- Give your team real experience handling an audit and working with auditors
- Familiarise your company with PJR’s audit team practices and communication styles before the stakes are real.
How the Pre-Assessment Works
One important principle to understand is that a pre-assessment is client-driven. You guide the process, so you can direct the auditor to your weakest areas and receive honest, direct feedback. A pre-assessment is not a consultation, though. The auditor identifies gaps but does not prescribe fixes. Consider it a thorough study guide before the final exam. Your team knows exactly what to work on before the registration audit begins.
Throughout the process, PJR’s audit team reviews your management system against the elements of the standard you’re pursuing, whether that’s ISO 9001, AS9100D, ISO 27001, or another. When the team identifies nonconformities, they document them in a Pre-Assessment Report alongside the strengths of your system. The report also includes a clear recommendation on whether your company is ready to move forward with the registration audit.
What to Expect During Your Pre-Assessment
- Opening Meeting
PJR auditors meet with your management team to outline the scope of the pre-assessment and address any questions upfront.
- Documentation Review
The audit team reviews your procedures and documented quality system to measure compliance with the applicable standard.
- Quality System Assessment
The audit team observes your facility, conducts interviews, requests documents, and examines equipment to evaluate compliance against the standard.
- Closing Meeting
The audit team presents findings both verbally and in a written report, covering a summary of strengths and actual or potential nonconformities. Corrective action is not required for nonconformities identified during a pre-assessment.
